This summer I’ve had the chance to do a long figure-study workshop with Wellington sculptor Javier Murcia. It’s been a long time, too long a long time, since I did any work in clay, and I’ve never spent so much concentrated time working on building a figure. The focus was very much on understanding anatomy and being as accurate as possible, and building up everything in layers. The work was at a 1/3 human scale, the same as my old faithful skele model posed here.
In a good way, this’ll never be finished, but get left to gently dry and crumble, and act as a reference – it was definitely all about the experience and learning. Hopefully that learning will translate to other art things I do this year.
Way to spend a week
